Loggerhead Shrike: This species is federally protected and a State Species of Special Comcern. It is a fairly common non-breeding summer, fall and early winter visitor. It frequents grassland, scrub and open areas, including disturbed habitat. It is regularly observed in the Slough from mid-June to early April. The ideal breeding habitat is present in Goleta Slough, but breeding is not known between Point Conception and Ventura County.
